Analyzing the beginning of Seahawks Free Agency 2025: What's next?
As we come to a close on day one of NFL Free Agency, it is going just about how everyone expected. The Seahawks needed to clean house and hit the reset button, and they have done just that. With a solid head coach in Mike Macdonald, who is heading into his second year with the franchise, as well as the new addition at Offensive Coordinator in Klint Kubiak, they have a foundation to build on top of now.
Let’s dive in to the key moments throughout the true day one of the Seahawks offseason.
DK Metcalf on the move
Superstar wide receiver DK Metcalf was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2025 second round pick (52). This came just days after DK requested a trade from the Seahawks, as it was clear the two parties were moving in different directions. Metcalf was a fantastic Seahawk, and John Schneider didn’t seem to have a problem granting the request of the receiver.
Tyler Lockett gets released
After arriving to the organization as a third round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Seahawks icon, and the Seahawks, parted ways after 10 seasons together. Growing up as a teenager in Washington State, watching the Seahawks in their absolute prime, Lockett was the number one target for Russell Wilson. After Wilson’s departure, Lockett was still a cornerstone of the team. While his play slightly began to trail off, and Seattle was looking to prioritize fresh, young talent, this was a no-brainer move this year.
Sam Darnold becomes QB1
The Seahawks signs QB Sam Darnold to a 3yr deal Monday, solidifying our QB1 heading into the 2025-26 NFL season. Darnold put up career stats in Minnesota, with 4319 yards, 35 TDs, and 12 INTs. This is a very intriguing get, considering the plunder that was the Vikings final game of the season. They played the Rams in the NFC Wild Card Playoffs, and Darnold only managed to throw for 245 yards, resulting in 1 TD and 1 INT, with 9 sacks in the game. The Seahawks need to keep eyes on the offensive line so something like this won’t happen in Seattle.
My prediction for the rest of the Seahawks off season is that they will be focusing on Wide Receivers. With Metcalf and Lockett no longer playing at Lumen, the team needs to provide our new $100 million quarterback someone to throw to, beside Jaxson Smith-Njigba of course.
